School Done!!! Other stuff in life to write about now….

New Year right around the corner

Well in case I don’t see you before 2007 please have a Happy New Year and one that’s filled with joy peace love and blessings in abundance. Many people make resolutions (which for the most part are out the window by the end of January) but I usually don’t. Not for any real reason but I do think that improvement is an ongoing thing and is best tackled at the time of notice rather than waiting until yearend to look back and then resolve to do better in the future. Another thing that I find so dreary is the popular New Year’s song “Auld Lang Syne”. I cannot find a song that depresses me more.

Here are the words courtesy of siliconglen.com

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should auld acquaintaince be forgot
And auld lang syne.

chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll be your pint stowp
And surely I’ll be mine,
And we’ll drink a richt guid willy waught
For auld lang syne.

[chorus]

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pu’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wandered monie a wearie fit’
Since auld lang syne.

[chorus]

We twa hae paidled in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine
But seas a’tween us braid hae roared
Since auld lang syne

[chorus]

And here’s a hand my trusty fere
And gie’s a hand o’ thine
And we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

[chorus]

Words and original music: Robert Burns

On another note, January 1, 2007 should have seen Jamaicans receiving a tax break in the form of a 40% increase in the tax threshold to some $275,000. The headline in today’s paper states that this promise is on hold and have not given a definitive timeframe for implementation. They have given (according to the media) one of the main reasons as being the need to sensitize the public about other allowances that need to be removed to make the process revenue neutral. In my opinion it’s just another stalling tactic for a cash strapped government. Frankly, is better you tell me that you don’t have the funds rather than come up with some ridiculous excuse that don’t sound sensible to begin with. You cannot tell me that you make big announcement from more than six months ago and now your only excuse is ‘because of bad PR’ if that is the case then somebody should be fired for it. From the announcement is made provisions should start for smooth implementation. This process started in 2005 so there is n excuse.

Just another sign that the end is near  here for this government. They have slowly but surely killed their chances for re-election. The polls show that they hold firm but if popular talk is anything to go by, they have lost plenty ground. Well see.

At any rate enjoy the holiday for those who have one. Take care and see you all in 2007.

Christmas Came and Christmas Went……

Well what can I say. The holiday was quite hectic for me especially the demands of family. I would have liked to have been able to get a bit more rest but that was not to be. Spent Saturday and Sunday up and about. No real shopping as I hate the crowds so I had done most of that long before. Just doing all sorts of stuff. Saturday morning was about supermarket and car parts and nuff traffic. Sunday was church and the rest of supermarket and traffic. Monday was about brwakfast at family out of town and then back to family dinner in town plus some other friend stops in between. Yesterday was about friend stops and family dinner and foreign family visiting so the holiday was jam packed with stuff to do. Don’t even think that I’m complaining, the hectic schedule just makes me realize how blessed I really am. Had one little mishap. I had gotten a gift for a friend and when we were almost there I realized that it was left at home. I went anyway but it kinda put a damper on things not that there were anyisues involved but I felt bad about it.

Today I know i need to go get some tyres as my son told me that I’m running on racing slicks and that the “baby bottom” thing can’t work 🙂  . So today today today some new car shoes are in order.

Other than that I’m at office today but things are quiet and I expect that to continue for the rest of the week. My only wish is that your Christmas’ were good and that you enjoy the rest of the Season.

Updating Blogsphere

Hi All. It’s been about a week and change since I last posted. School is on break and exams are over. Mine went well and unless I wrote utter crap I should pass with reasonable ease. The paper was fair and the lecturer put exactly what he said he would on the paper. It cut across many of the topics and zoned in on others. It was a doable paper. What else has been going on?…I went to two parties for the season and I think I’m at my limit. Ain’t as young as I used to be 😀

Well my car went in for servicing this week and came back with a long list of “things to do” some critical and some will have to wait. Pretty much in keeping with what was expected since I haven’t been treating it nicely at all. Main thing was to get the transmission serviced since I noticed that it has been sluggish of late.

Wifey is still doing her house decorating for the holidays. The light bill will show the tale in January 😦    all in good season spirit though. Heck it’s only for once a year. I got my camera last night and I’m pleased. It isn’t new out of the box. It was used as display model so it was in a showcase according to the seller. I really don’t mind since I got it for half the price of the new model. I also opted for a lower pixel count based on my intended purpose and the cost of the higher end models. Bottom line is that I’m happy with my purchase including price and quality of what I bought.

Here are two pictures of it borrowed from Steve’s Digicams site.

He has done some reviews on the camera as well. You can check them out here at Steve’s.

Other than that things are pretty quiet. Will try to post a few more times before school opens back and also when I get to testing my new toy I’ll post some pictures. Until then, take care.

Christmas With Scratchie

Well since I didn’t jump on the love Thursday thing let me post a couple of photos from the Scratchie’s abode. The tree was decorated by Mrs. Scratchie and the Shorter One. I did the coloured lights.

The second photo is of a home made wreath The crochet was done by Mrs. Scratchie and I helped with the other stuff like the red satin wrapping in the background. Trust me…I know why they cost so much in the store. It took us days to get it right.

I’ll post some more in a while. Hopefully by then I will have gotten my digital camera. I saw one online for a deal and swiped at it. I got an email comfirmation that it arrived in Miami today so hopefully I will get it in hand in about a week. Hopefully it works. 🙂  But at least I should be able to post some better quality photos than what I have been doing here with the camera phone. We’ll see…

Compi back up Again

I am back from my “surgery” so to speak. No not real surgery, I mentioned some time ago that I was in the process of a computer building project. Well I spent this last week getting the parts all put together. I decided to do a little posting including some pictures of the parts.  So here goes.

Background:

Machine will be used for school assignments and general internet surfing as well as some simple gaming so no “tear down the house” specs required. The Shorter One will use it for her Sims  2 game and the Taller One will not be allowed to touch it since the reason I am taking this step is because I am tired of cleaning viruses and clearing hard drive space after he goes on his massive download sprees.  So here are the parts. This is supposed to be a budget build from scrap parts and used components so expect no scorching up to date table burning.

Parts List:

Processor: Celeron D 2.26GHz

Memory: 1Gig Kingston DDR333

Hard Drives: Maxtor 30Gig for applications, Maxtor 20Gig for data, Western Digital 10Gig just because I have it laying around.

Motherboard: MSI SpecV board

Monitor: 17″ CRT (bought used from my office for J$ 350.00…about US$5)

Optical Drives: 16X DVD player/CDRW combo drive, 56X CD drive

Floppy (obtained used from machine bought from my office)

56k modem (changed my mind no modem)

10/100 Network card (change of plans…integrated board being used)

OS: Windows 2000/Windows XP depending on which licence I have that is valid. Think I may have used up all my XP stuff so I think it be the Windows 2000 (Yes I try to keep all my machines legit). Maybe I’ll buy another XP licences and do the upgrade early in the new year..

So here starts the build:

Processor, mainboard, heatsink and fan assembly together.

New power supply added to case since the new processor requires an additional 4-pin connector 400W

memory modules added and board, harddrives and optical drives added to case.

Can’t forget the case fan…cooling is everything

power needed to all the components.

Finished CPU

All the back panel connections made. Hopefully it will work.

And it does……memory recognized and all the drives show up except the 10gig so out with that.

Operating System loaded and updates done. Mahine booting into Windows 2000

Internet connection baby so the router actually allows the machine surf

Machine is personaized by the Shorter One and the final setup of the desk.

I reused the case that I had been using before but I transferred the entire internals to a donor Pentium 3 machine. The Micron board actually mirrors the layout for the Biostar board that I was using. So I was able to move the components with no problems. I had bought the donor machine from my company for a grand total of US$20.00 which included CPU monitor mouse and keyboard. My initial plans to use a dual channel AsRock board was stalled as the board was DOA. So the MSI board was purchased. The entire build costed me just about $10, 000 or just about US$130.00 not bad really.

It was good for stress relief. I’ll be happy to answer any questions. I know Dr. D. will scuff at this post but …….. 😀

TGIF

Hey all,

Just doing a check in with the blog before wordpress kicks me off for lack of posting. 🙂 Well today is the best I’ve felt since weekend gone. I’ve been sick like a dawg. I’m sure some of you heard me barking over the week. Right now I have no voice so the usual chatterbox me is kinda very subdued right about this time. Well whatever limited Christmas shopping I will be doing this year got off the ground last night.

I’m giving thanks for the simple reason that all my presentations and group meetings and assignments are now behind me for this semester at least. I have one semester final on the 14th of December and then that’s it until mid-January. At least I can go to my bed a little earlier and worry a little less about school at this point. The exam to come is not a walkover but the type of course lends itself to more brainpower and less reading and swatting so it shouldn’t be too bad. What concerns me is that it is a lot of writing…three essays and some objective type stuff. The lecturer says we should not exceed 1 1/2 pages per essay so it can’t be that bad.

Other than that I have my grand niece and a sister-in-law staying with me for this week so the house has been a buzz of activity. My grandniece is 2 years old going on 22. Bright yuh see!!!! She is fun to have around but you have to constantly be watching her because little finger love to walk. I kind of just let her roam. She brings everything of interest back to show you. 😀  They leave on Sunday for the cold cold temperatures of New York. Hope they will visit again soon.

That’s it from me till whenever……
